What is this?

Feedback is something that every artist needs. However, there are different kinds of feedback -- some more helpful than others. What we're looking for here is what we call constructive feedback, or feedback that helps the artist better understand his or her weaknesses and allows them to improve. To find out these weaknesses, we must consider the art in question.

In a feedback mechanism like this, what artists generally look for isn't whether you liked the art or not but rather what parts of the art worked and what didn't. In other words, be specific about what it is that you felt worked well within the piece and what parts distracted from the overall experience. There are infinite variations of these criteria, so use your best judgment.

What about these questions?

What we're looking for from you is the answer to these questions: what went right? what went wrong? and what could we do to improve the next time we produce this piece?

These questions can easily narrow down the strengths and weaknesses of the production and give the artists a better feel for what they can do to improve next time.

Helpful Hints

Be specific and detailed.

As you can imagine, vague feedback doesn't help. An answer that sounds like "I didn't like the second act because I couldn't tell what was going on" doesn't help us much. What exactly caused you to not understand? Any number of problems could conspire to bring about this effect. Instead, write "During the second act, the lights were dim and I could barely make out the actors' faces."

Be tactful.

Artists are fragile creatures. We put ourselves out there and hope and pray that you like our production. With that in mind, be tactful and nice. "Your show sucked" doesn't help us at all, but "While there were parts of the show that were interesting, I didn't really enjoy my experience, and here's why..." is a much better response. Try and be positive, constructive, and helpful. It's okay if you didn't like something, but try and put it in terms that are more likely for them to take your complaint seriously.

Don't beat around the bush.

Having said the above, please get to the point. We put this form out here so that we can become better artists. If our feedback isn't accurate or isn't clear, then we can't improve! Our growth as artists are in your hands!
